Geographical Indications (GIs) play a crucial role in safeguarding the cultural heritage and economic value of regional products. For Gujarat, GIs are not merely legal tags but powerful tools that highlight the state’s unique identity in the global marketplace. Products such as Patola sarees of Patan, Bandhani of Kutch, Tangaliya weaving, Gir Kesar mangoes, and Bhalia wheat represent centuries of craftsmanship and agricultural excellence. By securing GI recognition, these goods gain authenticity, protect against imitation, and command premium prices internationally.
The importance of GIs extends beyond economics. They empower rural artisans and farmers by ensuring fair compensation, while simultaneously promoting Gujarat’s traditions to the world. GI recognition also strengthens tourism, as visitors seek authentic experiences tied to heritage products. In the global market, GIs act as a branding mechanism, positioning Gujarat as a hub of originality and quality.
However, challenges remain, including lack of awareness among producers and risks of counterfeiting. Addressing these issues through education, enforcement, and international cooperation will ensure Gujarat’s products achieve sustainable recognition. Ultimately, GIs are a bridge between heritage and modern trade, enabling Gujarat to preserve its cultural roots while thriving in global commerce.
ભૌગોલિક સંકેતો (GI) પ્રદેશના વિશિષ્ટ ઉત્પાદનોની સાંસ્કૃતિક વારસો અને આર્થિક મૂલ્યને સુરક્ષિત રાખવામાં મહત્વપૂર્ણ ભૂમિકા ભજવે છે. ગુજરાત માટે GI માત્ર કાનૂની ઓળખ નથી, પરંતુ વૈશ્વિક બજારમાં રાજ્યની અનોખી ઓળખને ઉજાગર કરતું શક્તિશાળી સાધન છે. પાટણની પટોળા સાડીઓ, કચ્છની બાંધણી, તંગાલિયા વણાટ, ગિર કેસર કેરી અને ભાલિયા ઘઉં જેવા ઉત્પાદનો સદીઓની કારીગરી અને કૃષિ કુશળતાનું પ્રતિનિધિત્વ કરે છે. GI માન્યતા મેળવવાથી આ ઉત્પાદનોને પ્રામાણિકતા મળે છે, નકલ સામે રક્ષણ મળે છે અને આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય સ્તરે ઊંચી કિંમત મળે છે.
GIનું મહત્વ માત્ર આર્થિક નથી. તે ગ્રામ્ય કારીગરો અને ખેડૂતોને યોગ્ય વળતર અપાવે છે અને સાથે સાથે ગુજરાતની પરંપરાઓને વિશ્વ સુધી પહોંચાડે છે. GI માન્યતા પર્યટનને પણ મજબૂત બનાવે છે, કારણ કે પ્રવાસીઓ વારસાગત ઉત્પાદનો સાથે જોડાયેલા અસલ અનુભવ શોધે છે. વૈશ્વિક બજારમાં GI બ્રાન્ડિંગ સાધન તરીકે કાર્ય કરે છે, ગુજરાતને મૂળિયતાવાળા અને ગુણવત્તાવાળા કેન્દ્ર તરીકે સ્થાન આપે છે.
તેમ છતાં, ઉત્પાદકોમાં જાગૃતિનો અભાવ અને નકલી ઉત્પાદનોના જોખમ જેવી પડકારો છે. શિક્ષણ, અમલ અને આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય સહકાર દ્વારા આ મુદ્દાઓ ઉકેલવાથી ગુજરાતના ઉત્પાદનોને ટકાઉ માન્યતા મળશે. અંતે, GI વારસો અને આધુનિક વેપાર વચ્ચેનું પુલ છે, જે ગુજરાતને તેની સાંસ્કૃતિક મૂળોને જાળવી રાખીને વૈશ્વિક વેપારમાં સફળતા અપાવે છે.

She earned her doctoral degree from Gujarat National Law University inIntellectual Property Rights. She gained wide experience as a Consultant on IPR with theNational Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, India during the years 2001- 2004. She is alsoassociated with Gujarat State Judicial Academy as Visiting Faculty, imparting training to newlyrecruited Judicial Magistrates for the State of Gujarat. She was nominated to be a member onthe Committee for Drafting IP Policy for the Central University of Gujarat in 2016. She alsoworked with the Education Department, Gujarat in making IPR policy for universities in theState of Gujarat to support innovation and start-ups in academia. She has several publicationson intellectual property rights to her credit including books, book chapters and research articles.She has delivered more than 100 expert lectures at various academic institutes across India.Her recent book titled “Geographical Indications of Indian Handloom- between legal right andreal right” is published on 31 December 2021 by the Routledge-Taylor and Francis, UK. Sheis recognized and awarded as one of the ‘100 Powerful IP Women in India 2021’ by the WorldIP Forum. She has been felicitated with an award for making significant contribution in the IPdomain in the State of Gujarat by the IPPO at 6th IP Fest organized in collaboration with GCCIon 11 November 2022. Her contribution in the field of IP is recognised by the IPTSE academywith an award under IP Recognition Category at the 6th Edition IP Conclave and Awards on 5th December 2023.

ડૉ. નિધી બૂચને શિક્ષણ ક્ષેત્રે ૨૦ વર્ષથી વધુનો અનુભવ છે અને તેઓ ૨૦૦૪માં સ્થાપના સમયે જ ગુજરાત નેશનલ લૉ યુનિવર્સિટી (જી.એન.એલ.યુ.) સાથે જોડાયા હતા. તેમણે બૌદ્ધિક સંપત્તિ અધિકાર (Intellectual Property Rights) વિષયમાં પીએચ.ડી. ગુજરાત નેશનલ લૉ યુનિવર્સિટીમાંથી પ્રાપ્ત કરી છે.
૨૦૦૧થી ૨૦૦૪ દરમિયાન તેઓ નેશનલ ઇન્સ્ટિટ્યૂટ ઑફ ડિઝાઇન, અમદાવાદ ખાતે આઈ.પી.આર. કન્સલ્ટન્ટ તરીકે કાર્યરત રહ્યા હતા. તેઓ ગુજરાત સ્ટેટ જ્યુડિશિયલ અકાદમી સાથે વિઝિટિંગ ફેકલ્ટી તરીકે જોડાયેલા છે અને રાજ્યના નવા નિયુક્ત ન્યાયિક મેજિસ્ટ્રેટોને તાલીમ આપે છે.
૨૦૧૬માં તેમને સેન્ટ્રલ યુનિવર્સિટી ઑફ ગુજરાત માટે આઈ.પી. પોલિસી તૈયાર કરતી સમિતિમાં સભ્ય તરીકે નિયુક્ત કરવામાં આવ્યા હતા. તેમણે ગુજરાત રાજ્યના શિક્ષણ વિભાગ સાથે મળીને રાજ્યની યુનિવર્સિટીઓ માટે આઈ.પી.આર. પોલિસી તૈયાર કરવામાં યોગદાન આપ્યું, જેથી નવીનતા અને સ્ટાર્ટ-અપ્સને શૈક્ષણિક ક્ષેત્રે પ્રોત્સાહન મળે.
તેમના નામે અનેક પુસ્તકો, પુસ્તક અધ્યાય અને સંશોધન લેખો પ્રકાશિત થયા છે. તેમણે ભારતભરના વિવિધ શૈક્ષણિક સંસ્થાઓમાં ૧૦૦થી વધુ નિષ્ણાત વ્યાખ્યાનો આપ્યા છે. તેમનું તાજેતરનું પુસ્તક “Geographical Indications of Indian Handloom – between legal right and real right” ૩૧ ડિસેમ્બર ૨૦૨૧ના રોજ Routledge-Taylor and Francis, UK દ્વારા પ્રકાશિત થયું છે.
તેમને વર્લ્ડ આઈ.પી. ફોરમ દ્વારા ‘100 Powerful IP Women in India 2021’ તરીકે માન્યતા આપવામાં આવી છે. ૧૧ નવેમ્બર ૨૦૨૨ના રોજ જી.સી.સી.આઈ. સાથે મળીને આયોજિત ૬ઠ્ઠા આઈ.પી. ફેસ્ટમાં આઈ.પી.પી.ઓ. દ્વારા ગુજરાત રાજ્યમાં આઈ.પી. ક્ષેત્રે મહત્વપૂર્ણ યોગદાન બદલ તેમને સન્માનિત કરવામાં આવ્યા હતા. ૫ ડિસેમ્બર ૨૦૨૩ના રોજ IPTSE અકાદમી દ્વારા ૬ઠ્ઠા એડિશન આઈ.પી. કોન્ક્લેવ અને એવોર્ડ્સમાં IP Recognition Category હેઠળ તેમને પુરસ્કૃત કરવામાં આવ્યા હતા.
